One of the principal goals of Gaia and surveys like it is to infer the density map and formation history of the Milky Way. I present a few toy problems in which we use phase-space information for a snapshot of tracer particles to infer the matter density within the system.

Hubble fotografeert spectaculair stervormingsgebied in de Tarantulanevel
Ter gelegenheid van de 22ste verjaardag van de NASA/ESA ruimtetelescoop Hubble op 24 april 2012, is een spectaculaire foto vrijgegeven van het turbulente stervormingsgebied 30 Doradus in het hart van de Tarantulanevel. 30 Doradus is het helderste stervormingsgebied in onze directe galactische omgeving.

Herschel fotografeert tweelingbroertje van de Kuipergordel
Nieuwe opnamen van de ruimtetelescoop Herschel laten rond de jonge ster Fomalhaut de gloed zien van een extreem dynamische schijf van stof en gruis, waarin per dag duizenden kometen worden vernietigd. De structuur lijkt op de Kuipergordel in ons jonge zonnestelsel.
