Colloquium Tidal disruptions of stars by supermassive black holes: dynamics, light, and relics
James Guillochon, CfA
Wednesday,
17 Feb. 11:30
Location: C4.174
Most supermassive black holes in the local universe lie dormant, with only one in a hundred accreting at their Eddington limits. Tidal disruptions of stars by supermassive black holes give these dormant black holes a chance to be seen once every ~10,000 years, and each tidal disruption brings along with it a host of observable signatures.

Colloquium Catching Quenching Galaxies: Following the Road Less Traveled to Galaxy Transformation
Katherine Alatalo , Carnegie Observatories
Wednesday,
24 Feb. 11:30
Location: C4.174
Modern day galaxies are found to be in a bimodal distribution, both in terms of their morphologies, and in terms of their colors, and these properties are inter-related. In color space, there is a genuine dearth of intermediate colored galaxies, which has been taken to mean that the transition a galaxy undergoes to transform must be rapid.

National supercomputer to be used for API supernova project.
Mathieu Renzo was granted 500.000 CPU hours on Cartesius computer by the NWO for a pilot project simulating the final days of stellar evolution. This will provide detailed models of the iron core structure before the star explodes and create the initial condition for the supernova explosion.
