Lunch talk II: R144 and DR1 - two extraordinary Wolf-Rayet stars

Location: C4.174 		I will present recent results on two Wolf-Rayet stars, R144 in the LMC, and DR1 in IC1613. The first is the brightest Wolf-Rayet star in the LMC, and for that reason has long be suspected to be a binary, although radial velocity variations have not been observed in earlier research. Using multi-epoch X-Shooter observations, we have now identified R144 as a double-lined spectroscopic binary.

Record-pulsar stelt algemene relativiteitstheorie op de proef
Astronomen hebben ESO’s Very Large Telescope en een aantal radiotelescopen elders ter wereld gebruikt om een bizar stellair duo op te sporen en te onderzoeken. Het om elkaar heen draaiende tweetal bestaat uit de zwaarste neutronenster die tot nu toe is opgespoord en een witte dwergster.

Kandidaat zwaarste dubbelster geïdentificeerd
Astronomen hebben een dubbelster waargenomen die bij zijn geboorte 300 tot 400 zonsmassa’s woog. De huidige totale massa van de twee sterren is tussen 200 en 300 maal die van de zon, afhankelijk van het stadium van hun evolutie. Dit maakt het systeem mogelijk de zwaarste dubbelster die bekend is.

Planeet kleiner dan Mercurius ontdekt rond Kepler-37
De NASA/Kepler-telescoop heeft een planeet kleiner dan Mercurius ontdekt rond de ster Kepler-37. Deze planeet - die ongeveer zo groot is als onze maan – is de binnenste van in totaal drie planeten die draaien rond een ster die een iets koeler zusje is van onze zon.
