The Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy (API) has joined the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics - Center for the Evolution of the Elements (JINA-CEE) as an Associated Institution ( http://jinaweb.org).  JINA-CEE is a Physics Frontier Center of the USA’s National Science Foundation. The Center brings together nuclear experimentalists, nuclear theorists, astronomers, theoretical astrophysicists and computational physicists to tackle fundamental questions about the evolution and properties of matter in the cosmos, and the origin of the chemical elements that make up our universe.  API faculty members Anna Watts and Rudy Wijnands, and Vidi Fellow Nathalie Degenaar, are working with their JINA-CEE colleagues on nuclear reactions and supranuclear density matter in neutron stars.  Neutron stars are the ultra-compact remnants left after heavy stars (10-15 times the mass of our Sun) reach the end of their lives and go supernova.
